On the morning of February 28, 2011 it was announced by Apricus Biosciences, Inc. that a brand new weapon has been added to the arsenal of erectile dysfunction remedies – Vitaros. While this drug has already been released in the European market (which, according to Apricus Biosciences’ press release, represented almost $1.2 billion in revenue in 2010), it will now be available to men in the United States as an alternative to popular ED drugs like Viagra, Cialis, and Levitra.

The arrival of Vitaros has, understandably, left many men asking, “What makes this latest drug better than the ED treatments already available?” According to the manufacturer, the two-part answer to that question concerns both the drug’s unique biochemical process, and its delivery system.

How Vitaros is Used

In contrast to the three erectile dysfunction remedies that represent its strongest competition, Vitaros is a topical cream – not a pill. This allows the drug to be administered topically to the penis, instead of being ingested.

In its announcement, Apricus Biosciences stated that the topical delivery of alprostadil (the active ingredient in Vitaros) enters the blood much more quickly than was previously possible when the drug was administered as a suppository or injection. In clinical studies, this resulted in patients gaining erections in only minutes, while experiencing none of the side effects typically associated with other erectile dysfunction drugs.

Why Vitaros Works

Similar to the traditional ED drugs that are administered as pills, Vitaros is a PDES (phosphodiesterase) inhibitor that stimulates increased blood flow throughout the body. Its effectiveness is due to its ability to partially-block the PDES enzyme that is sometimes associated with poor circulation to the extremities (including the penis), while simultaneously boosting cardiac activity.

By applying the aprostadil topically, however, Vitaros was found to be effective in treating men who have not responded to Viagra, Cialis, or Levitra. The fact that this new medication would seem to succeed in even those severe cases of ED where other drugs have failed (and without the side effects, no less), gives new hope to untold numbers of men around the world.

Is Vitaros the New King of ED Remedies?

While the final verdict on Vitaros will not be in for some time, its apparent success in treating severe ED – coupled with its fast action and lack of side effects – has caught the attention of everyone associated with erectile dysfunction remedies. Vitaros seems, if nothing else, to be a viable new alternative for men who have previously been unable to achieve satisfactory results with standard ED medications.
